Randall or Brooklyn for a Friday

Since Philly is a great beer town it's no surprise that multiple events tend to bump up against one another  The dilemma of going here or there and doing this or that is bound to happen.  Such is situation this weekend. It starts Friday with Randall @ TJ's or a taste of Brooklyn @ The Grey Lodge.

Randall 3.0

Sam with original Randall

The new and improved Randall the Enamel Animal (3.0 version) has been unleashed upon the world.  From the beer stained lab of creative brew genius Sam Calagione Randall the, "organoleptic hop transducer module" has been redesigned.  The new two chamber system was created to allow for a less foamy pour.  While it's common to use whole flower hops with Randall for an over the top hop infused beer, some bartending visionaries are already experimenting with more unique blendings.  A variety of fruit, spices and herbs can be added to the chamber to create endless flavor combinations.  I'm thinking Raison D'Etre with bourbon soaked raisins.

TJ's Restaurant & Drinkery
On Friday see Randall work its blending magic at TJ's Restaurant and DrinkeryDogfish Head Chateau Jiahu gets Randallized with Chinese 5 Spice. Once you've had your Randall fix the rest of the impressive TJ draft list is at your disposal. Randall is unleashed at 4pm.

The Grey Lodge
Brooklyn in the house.  Such is the case at The Grey Lodge Friday night.  It's Brooklyn Detonation Night. A line-up of rare Brooklyn Brewing goodies. 6pm start PAYG

Brooklyn Oktoberfest
Brooklyn Detonation Ale (double IPA)
Brooklyn Cookie Jar Porter
Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout

Randall or Brooklyn.  The choice is yours.

Did someone say BROOKLYN? Any reason for some Beasties

Favorite Beer List of the Week (No List Addition)

As you can tell from the photos the Favorite Beer List of the Week comes without a draft board photo.  The one in the background doesn't count. Blame my poor skills as a photographer for that little goof. However, those of you who attended this year's one and only Friday the Firkinteenth at The Grey Lodge can vouch for the awesome cask line up. Thirty firkins set to pour throughout the day with 7 on at a time.

I managed to arrive around 40 minutes after the 9am start time and after a short time standing slid into a comfortable position at the bar.  Unlike the last Firkenteeth I attended it took longer than 30 minutes for the first cask to kick. Somewhere near the three hour mark the final drops of Dock Street Summer Session were poured as a joyous crowd cheered the changing of the brew. Unfortunately with limited time it was my one and only cask kicking experience of the day.

For those of you who couldn't make it to the great Northeast this year, mark your calenders now. Your next chance is May 13, 2011

Friday the Firkinteenth There and Here

Google Friday the Firkinteenth and as expected info for The Grey Lodge springs onto the screen. However if you look close you'll notice a little something going on in Baltimore. T-Bonz Grille & Pub in Ellicott City is doing their own Firkinteenth. Not at the level of what's going on in the great Northeast but still a nice little collection of cask ales.

Quick Pours: Summer Santa's Xmas in July

It happens every July the spirit of Christmas visits bars encouraging everyone to partake in those wonderful winter warmers and malty cold weather beers. The holiday spirit hits the area twice on July 10th.

Christmas is coming on Friday and every Friday until the end of July. Bridgid's will unwrap at least one holiday beer from their winter stash. If you're good Troegs Mad Elf, St. Bernardus Christmas, Delerium Noel, Corsendonk Christmas and others will fill your glass. If you're naughty you'll still get beer but at least be nice to the bartender.

North Pole or Northeast? Who can tell when the Christmas beers flow? Scoats plays the role of Santa by delivering us a fine selection of merry ales and yummy treats.

We have been sitting on barrels of Troegs Mad Elf, Rogue Santa’s Private
Reserve
, and Corsendonk Xmas Ale since December for this event. Other Xmas
beers are expected in as well. We also plan to have Xmas treats from Hesh's
Bakery for dessert, free with the purchase of any entree.

Happy Holidays!

Me a Beer Geek? Blame it on the Ops.

Philly Beer Week can bring the true inner geek out in any craft beer lover. It happened to me last night. After spending the early part of the evening at The Grey Lodge enjoying some fantastic beer from Voodoo Brewing and Dark Horse (I need more Double Crooked Tree) I met up with friends at Tria Cafe at 18th & Sansom. My friend Ed asked me to trust his beer choosing abilities, which I did, and soon I was sharing a bottle of Brooklyn Black Ops. Bourbon aged beers are my weakness and this on did not disappoint.

The Black Ops is a Russian Imperial Stout aged for 4 month in bourbon barrels and fermented with champagne yeast. The pour was jet black with a two finger deep tan head. Hints of bourbon worked through the upfront aroma of chocolate and roasted coffee. Although on the boozy side the bourbon stayed subtle and never took over. Oak, some dark fruit and vanilla all started to appear as the beer warmed. Since I wasn't at home, kicked back in my leather chair by a fire I was glad to be sharing this bottle. I highly recommended you get to Tria before it's gone.

My geek moment of the night happened after my last sip of Ops. The power of the bourbon aged treat moved me to convince Kelleigh to drive over to the London Grill so I could shake hands with Garrett Oliver, Brewmaster for Brooklyn Brewing. My guess is the 11% was part of the motivation. Of course I wasn't the only one waiting to bend Garrett's ear with questions about food and beer pairings. However I may of been the only one to take an empty bottle of Black Ops from Tria, bring it to London Grill and have him sign it. This beer geek has no shame?

Oh So Lucky Weekend: Friday the Firkinteenth

Love was in the air this past weekend and so was the smell of cask beer pouring at the Grey Lodge Pub. This past Friday was the first of three, of this year's Friday the Firkinteenths. The cask ale event always brings in swarms of real ale fans to the northeast pub to drink some of the freshest beer available. Last year was my first FTF experience and I couldn't wait for my second go around. The only change I wanted to make this year was to arrive early enough to secure a seat at the bar. I know some of you like to work the crowd but I was looking for more of a lazy day of sampling versus swimming through the masses to get a beer. Arriving just after 11:00 I found my spot at the bar and flexed my drinking muscles for the first wave.

Scoats tapped the first keg around noon to the cheers and clicking cameras of real beer fans. The masses had every reason to be happy on the supposed most unlucky day of the year. The beer line up was great from go. A few stand out for me were the California Dreamin' Double IPA from Manayunk Brewery. It was shocking if only for the way it looked in the glass. The overly cloudy orange color made it look more like juice than beer. The grapefruit hop quality came out quick along with a nice sweetness that lead to a slightly bitter finish. For a DIPA it seemed almost too easy to drink. The tapping of Nugget Nectar caused the biggest frenzy. I don't know the actual time it took to finish the firkin but there may of been a point where no other beer was being poured. It seemed as if every arm was reaching out for the hop bomb. As quick as it arrived it was kicked. Even though I loved the Nectar my favorite beer of the day was The Bruery's Saison De Lente.

The Bruery is located in Placentia, CA just outside Anaheim and thanks to Bella Vista their beers are starting to pop up in the Philadelphia market. I haven't had a ton of saisons but Saison De Lente is a good one. The beer is citrusy with earthy character, grassiness, some light funk from the Brett and drinks dry and crisp. It was one of those beers I could lounge back with and drink all afternoon. I know at 6.5%abv it's no session beer however if you have been drinking heavy winter beers and tipping back Double IPAs like me Saison De Lente is a nice switch. I've already circled The Bruery events at Capone's and Devils Den during beer week.

When: Monday, March 09, 2009 7:00 PM

We will be tapping a firkin of Saison De Lente, the spring
seasonal of The Bruery from Orange County, Calif.

As expected Scoats did another fantastic job with the event. Because I am always out the door before 5:00pm I never get to experience the after work crowd. I would love to hear what it's like at the Grey Lodge later in the day. Since the next Friday the Firkinteenth is during Philly Beer Week expect an even bigger turn out. Scoats has already posted the details and the event will start at an earlier time. Getting a seat at the bar maybe a bit more challenging. Good luck.

Get Lucky Three Times with Friday the Firkinteenth

I just caught the current list of firkins for Friday the Firkinteenth at The Grey Lodge Pub and I am ready to grab a bar stool now. If your not familiar with the event it's a cask ale beer festival that takes place on Friday the 13th. Only the calender determines when the event will happen each year. This year we get a maximum three opportunities (Feb, Mar, Nov) to enjoy real ale. Last year was my first experience and I hope to make two of the three this year. The second FtF in 09 coincidentally takes place during Philly Beer Week. For a great description of the event and a quick video click here. The current draft listing for the event is below

Oops it was Groundhog Day

In all my Super Bowl celebrating yesterday I forgot to acknowledge Groundhog Day. Even though I had my Hawaiian shirt picked out I wasn't able to make it up to The Grey Lodge Pub for the big event. I'm still a bit bummed over that one. Oh well if I only had the chance to do it over.

It's a New Day

Today is the inauguration of Barack Obama and hopefully the beginning of change for the better. I wont go into a huge political rant, good riddance Mr. Bush, but I am looking forward to the next four years. To celebrate the day head out to any of the inaugural gatherings and cheer the change.

The Institute
"Screw the man, I'm toasting the inauguration." Start the day early by telling your boss to screw off and head to The Institute for a 50 cent shot and a beer of your choice for 50 cents. How often can you feel warm and toasty for just a buck? The party goes 9:30am-1pm.

The Grey Lodge Pub
A sixtel of Dogfish Head 120 IPA taps at 10am. 120 on 1/20 how appropriate and at nearly 20% a potent start to the day.

London Grill
Ommegang's Obamagang, sorry oops I mean Inauguration Ale 2009 pours all day and all night starting at noon.

Dock Street Brewery
Watch the live broadcast of the inauguration and enjoy beer specials starting @ 1pm.

Several place around Philadelphia as well as DC, Baltimore, New York, Boston, Chicago and NYC will have Ommegang's Inauguration Ale 2009 (AKA Obamagang) on draft.
Chicago list

Ommegang's Inauguration Ale 2009 (aka Obamagang)
"The TTB won't let us call the beer Obamagang on the keg label. So it will be known legally as Inauguration Ale 2009, but the tap handles will be more...um...direct. The style lies between a porter and stout, with a bit of Kriek and a touch of chocolate blended in. It will be on draft only, beginning with the inauguration - in limited areas including DC, NYC, Syracuse, Philly, Chicago and Boston. We will donate a percentage of sales to charities in the respective cities where the beer is sold, and we've asked our distributors to match our donations and pick the local charities. (Also please note that the beer is not an endorsement of Obama.)"

World Debut and Pliny Too

There is nothing like a beer debut to solidify Philadelphia's status as beer central. O.K. it is the debut of a PA beer but it is still a big deal. Yuengling's Lord Chesterfield Ale makes it's world draft debut tonight at The Grey Lodge Pub. There will be giveaways to go along with the beer so get there early. The festivities go from 6-9pm.

The Pliny Report

You probably already know that Pliny has left the building at The Grey Lodge and at McMenamin's (oops missed that one) but don't fear the Elder's reign continues in Philly. I got word from a Memphis Taproom email that they will soon pour Pliny as well as Blind Pig IPA. Make sure to check the Memphis Taproom website for their current draft list.

Early Arrival

I was caught napping. SURPRISE, Pliny the Elder went on earlier than expected at the Grey Lodge. It was tapped on Saturday and with a Sunday full of football it should be interesting to see how long it will last. If the Ballast Point Big Eye IPA that kicked in three days is any gauge then you might want to get in your car and drive to the Northeast right now, if it's not already too late.

The Reign Continues

Looks like the reign of Pliny the Elder will continue. The Grey Lodge Pub hopes to tap Pliny around Monday. Thanks Scoats for that great info. No growlers please, this one is by the glass. That should give more people the opportunity to taste the elusive brew. Remember to check The Grey Lodge website or their blog to see exactly when the Pliny starts flowing. Time to adjust the schedule to fit in a quick trip to the Northeast.

Grab a Book, a Pint and Some Brunch

Here is a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Lew Bryson and Mark Haynie will be at The Grey Lodge Pub to launch their new book, New Jersey Breweries. You can pick up a copy there, have it signed by Lew and Mark and then grab a pint of one of many NJ beers on tap. The Grey Lodge's full brunch menu will also be available. Just tell the wife or girlfriend you want to take them to a great brunch and remember to act surprised when you see Lew and Mark.

A Reason for Cloning

I have already banged my head against the wall more than a few times over this one. This Friday the 25th presents an interesting dilemma for beer fans around Philadelphia. There are no less than three beer oriented activities happening and they are nowhere near each other. Now I know that I should just be happy that I have something to choose from but that's hard when you want to go to them all. I don't feel like bouncing around the area depleting my gas tank more than I need to so a choice has to be made. The nominees in no particular order are.

1. The Grey Lodge, NE Phila.
Flying Fish Head Brewer Casey Hughes steps in from 6-9pm to challenge the crowd at R U Smarter Than Casey? The rare Bourbon aged Flying Fish Abbey Dubbel is also being tapped. MMMMM... bourbon!!!!

2. Stewart's Brewing Co, Bear DE.
Big Beer Friday is set in preparation for their 13th Anniversary Party on Saturday. Stewart's will be serving some of their best from the current and past beer list. Bourbon Stout, Cherry Dubbel, Barleywine 2008, Vintage Barleywines, Bourbon Barleywines, Stumblin' Monk, Abbey Dubbel and Conundrum. Can you say designated driver?

3. Ron's Original Bar and Grill, Exton PA.
It's Victory Brewing Night. Sales Rep Tracey Mulligan will have the only area release outside of the brewery of Wild Devil. MMMMM...Brettanomyces. Also enjoy 10 Year Alt, Baltic Thunder, Kolsch,Prima Pils, Mad King Weiss, Hop Devil and Whirlwind Wit.

Oh well a choice must be made. The great thing is there are no losers in the bunch. Things are a little easier on Saturday with Stewart's 13th Anniversary Party starting at 11am and The Brew at the Zoo beer festival at the Philadelphia Zoo starting at 6pm. Oh wait I forgot the Battle of the Brewery Bands at Stoudts Brewing Company that also kicks off at 6pm. This is going to be one serious beer weekend. Now just to figure out which way to point the car.
