What Snow (Sat)? Iron Hill Brewery Belgium Comes to West Chester

When the snow starts falling there are two ways to handle it. Some will prepare for the worst and hibernate until the world is somewhat back to normal. The second approach is to take the wintry challenge head on and not let it stand in the way of getting things done. This was the attitude of Larry, the Iron Hill W.C. crew and all those who ventured out to Belgium Comes to West Chester on Saturday. No stinking 20+ inches of snow is enough to keep man and beer apart.

After clearing out my little section of the world Kelleigh and I headed out and arrived around 4:30 to a packed house. This year's set up was great. The Iron Hill team used their heads, organizing the 30 beers available into 3 groups of 10 sample pours each. Brilliant! It made navigating a monster beer list and picking samples simple. Of course regular pours and individual samples were also available. I made the difficult decision to have only one (damn) tray (sample #2) along with a few side pours. For those in the know (I hope you read this) the extra treat was in the brewhouse. The cleverly done Brew Lounge gave everyone the opportunity to sample 4 of Larry Horwitz and Jean Broillet's specialty beers. A very nice touch.

An extra huge thanks to Bryan Kolesar for allowing me to partake in the bottle of New Belgium La Folie. Go figure I ran into him in The Brew Lounge. If you don't know, I'm the cheerful one on the left trying to hold back my excitement. I must of been in a state of good beer shock. And this year's Belgium Comes to West Chester certainly provided plenty of that.

Iron Hill's Ichabod Tapping

I am still ridding the pumpkin beer wave that sweeps through breweries this time of year. For many it is a love or hate ordeal when bottle shops and distributors cram shelves and isles with what seems like an endless selection of pumpkin beers. It's easy to understand how anyone can quickly burn out on this style. On the other hand I have always worshiped at the temple of the orange gourd. I make it a point to satiate myself on every pumpkin item available. This past Saturday I had the chance to satisfy my intense craving. The Pumpkin Fest at Iron Hill Brewery in North Wales was a pumpkin fanatics Shangi-La.

Ever wonder what it's like to tap a huge pumpkin full of beer? Head brewer Larry Horwitz and assistant brewer Doug Marchakitus not only tapped a pumpkin, they shared the autumn brew with fans who gathered for the event. The Ichabod Imperial Belgian Pumpkin Ale that poured straight from the giant squash was the perfect elixir for a dreary fall afternoon. Besides the Imperial Pumpkin, Iron Hill offered their regular Pumpkin Ale along with a menu full of pumpkin inspired dishes. I kept my insane craving in check and had only two glasses of Ichabod and a slice of pumpkin pie with bourbon whipped cream. A perfect autumn combination. Amazingly I remembered the video function on my camera so I took the opportunity to shoot the tapping.

Ichabod Imperial Belgian Pumpkin Ale

The beer poured a hazy brownish orange from the pumpkin. The small off white head quickly faded and created only minimal lacing. The aroma was filled with cove, nutmeg, banana nut bread and cinnamon. The flavor of fresh pumpkin was most detectable upfront however the classic pumpkin pie spices soon dominate the taste. The malt sweetness and spices remained mild and never took on the huge, "pie in a glass" quality. The alcohol does show in the finish but the 10%abv is surprisingly well hidden. The Ichabod Imperial Pumpkin Ale adds a nice Belgian twist to the ever growing pumpkin beer category.

Beer Life in NJ?

Everyone has been reporting on Iron Hill's new digs that are scheduled to open in 2009 in Maple Shade. Finally another brewer in the beer vacuum that is South Jersey. Now another spark of beer life is seen from an unexpected source. The national restaurant chain Champps is test marketing multi taps of craft beer at the Marlton location. There is also a location in Chicago that has undergone the beer transformation. Think about it, NJ is swamped with strip malls and chain restaurants. If all goes well who knows all those cookie cutter fooderies might have to wise up and start selling something other than BudMillerCoors. So, beer lovers in the garden state unite, head to Champps in Marlton and drink craft beer for a good cause. Check out the details posted over at BA.

Maybe this is a sign that South Jersey's days as a beer establishment wasteland are numbered? We can only hope.

Philly Beer Review

I put a few beers into the hands of Greg and Jeff at Craft Beer Radio and they put together a show with a very Philly focus. Philadelphia Brewing Company (Rowhouse Red, Kenzinger, Newbold, Walt Wit), River Horse (Double White, Hop Hazard), Iron Hill (Ring of Fire), Monk's Cafe (Flemish Sour Ale) are all reviewed.

Greg and Jeff started their weekly podcast back in 2005 and are currently on show 122. They primarily review beer but also offer info on food pairings, beer news and current events. If you haven't listened click on the link and get to know Craft Beer Radio.
