Wegmans Pub?

Philly.com is reporting that the new Wegmans in Collegeville will have a pub to go along with its vast array of high end grocery choices and Market Cafe. This will be a first for a Wegmans in Southeastern PA. The store is scheduled to open sometime in October. Going grocery shopping just got a whole lot more interesting. I can already imagine husbands signing on for the big weekend shopping trip.

Penn Brewing Lives On!!!

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Penn Brewing is staying put for at least five years. Today at a news conference it was announced that a new 5 year lease had been worked out and the North Side Brewery will remain in their current location. Gotta love a happy ending.

My Kind of Film: Beer Wars

It's not often that beer is the subject of a film, however that changes on Thursday April 16th with the debut of Beer Wars . The film is a documentary that claims to give an insiders view on the ever growing market struggle taking place in the beer industry. The classic battle of David (the craft brewers) versus Goliath (the macro boys). The film is directed by Anat Baron and is promoted as a one night event hosted live by Ben Stein. Apparently after the showing a live discussion is scheduled with some of the people appearing in the film. Tickets are being sold in advance for theaters across the country and there are several locations listed for Philly, Pittsburgh and other areas of PA. Finally the perfect date move. Now if we could just get a few taps at the concession stand or at least make it BYOB?

Welcome Back Bethlehem Brew Works

Bethlehem Brew Works is having a party to celebrate their grand re-opening. After a grease fire back in December caused the brewery to shut its doors they soon re-opened with only a limited "fire" menu. The doors shut again on Feb 15th for renovations and today is the official 100% Grand Re-Opening Party. Isn't it actually a re-re-opening party? Flagship pints are a dollar all week and it's a return to a full menu. Party on.

A Belgian Style Break: Resurrection Ale

During our big move this past week I found time to stop for a moment and taste a bit of Baltimore or Royersford depending on how you look at it. A bottle of The Brewer's Art Resurrection Ale that I received from the Baltimore Beer Guy has been residing in The Beer Fridge since the Super Bowl. My original plans were to use it to toast a Steelers victory but even though the Steelers were victorious the cork was never popped on this Belgian style ale. Now during the big move with all my beer in boxes and the cleaning out of the fridge I figured to lighten the load by one bottle.

This Belgian style Dubbel poured a cloudy copper color with a thick off white head that had staying power. The sweetness came through in the aroma with a mix of candi sugar and dark fruit. The malty beer had a medium mouthfeel, balanced carbonation, an upfront taste of apples, raisins and plums and was sweet without being cloying. Nothing shocking here, it was what you would expect from a easy drinking lighter Dubbel. There are certainly stronger more flavorful Dubbels but this one was perfect for a quick break in a full day of moving. The 7% abv thankfully provided a good kick without sending me into nap mode. I only wish that I could buy this in PA. It's funny to think that I now live only a short drive from Sly Fox Royersford where Resurrection is contract brewed, but unless I am heading to Maryland I'm not getting a bottle anytime soon. Again, a huge thanks to Brian for getting me this one.

My Rant: PA/Philly Beer Love

Sometimes I sit back and think how lucky we are to have access to so much great beer. The thought really hit me at Friday the Firkinteenth. This has to be the best beer area in the country. I know this isn't a new revelation. Hey, I have Don "Joe Sixpack" Russell's book and it's been said by other beer writers and bloggers many times over. It just really resonated with me while I watched firkin after firkin being tapped at the Grey Lodge.

The best of subject even came up again in a recent thread over at Beer Advocate. The topic was best beer states. Pennsylvania came up multiple times. California seemed to take top spot more than any other with Colorado, Oregon and Michigan frequently getting mentioned. The thing is I honestly believe PA, specifically the Philly area, (Pittsburgh you are getting better) beats them all. I could rehash everything that Mr. Sixpack has put out about our great city, list all the awards the local breweries have won, talk about this area being Belgium USA, dive into the history of lager, note the success of Philly Beer Week, name all the amazing beer establishments and post all the accolades from beer folk across the country but for me it simply comes down to the variety. We have more beer variety than any other region in the country.

If you are lucky enough to drink with people from other areas this topic will always bring up strong feelings and debate. I've heard that CA breweries have more GABF awards than any other state or that Portland, OR has more breweries and brew pubs per capita than any other city in the US. True, true, true those places have a pile of awards and brewpubs popping up like Wawas but it not just awards and brewpub locations. I want VARIETY!!! What choices do I have when it comes to what I can get in my glass? Can I find an amazing sour Belgian? What about a Rauch bier or a Berliner Weiss? How many different Imperial IPAs can I find? Where can I get a nice cask ale? This area offers it all. Sure I am a bit bias, but I've traveled and bent an elbow in many beer bars and brewpubs. For me Philly comes in at #1. Now if we could just get rid of the case law (Keep up the good fight Mr. Bryson) PA craft beer drinkers could lay claim to a true beer utopia.

Oh So Lucky Weekend: Friday the Firkinteenth

Love was in the air this past weekend and so was the smell of cask beer pouring at the Grey Lodge Pub. This past Friday was the first of three, of this year's Friday the Firkinteenths. The cask ale event always brings in swarms of real ale fans to the northeast pub to drink some of the freshest beer available. Last year was my first FTF experience and I couldn't wait for my second go around. The only change I wanted to make this year was to arrive early enough to secure a seat at the bar. I know some of you like to work the crowd but I was looking for more of a lazy day of sampling versus swimming through the masses to get a beer. Arriving just after 11:00 I found my spot at the bar and flexed my drinking muscles for the first wave.

Scoats tapped the first keg around noon to the cheers and clicking cameras of real beer fans. The masses had every reason to be happy on the supposed most unlucky day of the year. The beer line up was great from go. A few stand out for me were the California Dreamin' Double IPA from Manayunk Brewery. It was shocking if only for the way it looked in the glass. The overly cloudy orange color made it look more like juice than beer. The grapefruit hop quality came out quick along with a nice sweetness that lead to a slightly bitter finish. For a DIPA it seemed almost too easy to drink. The tapping of Nugget Nectar caused the biggest frenzy. I don't know the actual time it took to finish the firkin but there may of been a point where no other beer was being poured. It seemed as if every arm was reaching out for the hop bomb. As quick as it arrived it was kicked. Even though I loved the Nectar my favorite beer of the day was The Bruery's Saison De Lente.

The Bruery is located in Placentia, CA just outside Anaheim and thanks to Bella Vista their beers are starting to pop up in the Philadelphia market. I haven't had a ton of saisons but Saison De Lente is a good one. The beer is citrusy with earthy character, grassiness, some light funk from the Brett and drinks dry and crisp. It was one of those beers I could lounge back with and drink all afternoon. I know at 6.5%abv it's no session beer however if you have been drinking heavy winter beers and tipping back Double IPAs like me Saison De Lente is a nice switch. I've already circled The Bruery events at Capone's and Devils Den during beer week.

As expected Scoats did another fantastic job with the event. Because I am always out the door before 5:00pm I never get to experience the after work crowd. I would love to hear what it's like at the Grey Lodge later in the day. Since the next Friday the Firkinteenth is during Philly Beer Week expect an even bigger turn out. Scoats has already posted the details and the event will start at an earlier time. Getting a seat at the bar maybe a bit more challenging. Good luck.

Love is On the Half Shell

I would consider myself an unromantic goon if I didn't post something with a Valentines Day focus. I am sure that most of you are making big plans for the weekend and have already purchased the appropriate love goodies to make your significant other swoon. If you are looking to get the love juices flowing a bit early then head to the London Grill tonight for Oysters and Love Stout. Yards Love Stout on the beer engine and London's oysters on special. Yards Brewmaster Tom Kehoe will be on hand starting at 6pm. The aphrodisiac qualities of the oysters combined with the effects of a few beers could make for an interesting evening. Remember if things get too hot and steamy be considerate; get a room.

Get Lucky Three Times with Friday the Firkinteenth

I just caught the current list of firkins for Friday the Firkinteenth at The Grey Lodge Pub and I am ready to grab a bar stool now. If your not familiar with the event it's a cask ale beer festival that takes place on Friday the 13th. Only the calender determines when the event will happen each year. This year we get a maximum three opportunities (Feb, Mar, Nov) to enjoy real ale. Last year was my first experience and I hope to make two of the three this year. The second FtF in 09 coincidentally takes place during Philly Beer Week. For a great description of the event and a quick video click here. The current draft listing for the event is below

Hyped on Hops: Hopslam and Nugget Nectar

Over these past few weeks hop heads have been rejoicing over the release of Bell's HopSlam and Troegs Nugget Nectar. If you look at Beer Advocate you will read about people frothing at the mouth discussing where and when both will be pouring and offering their first born for a bottle or two in trade. I have to admit that I got swept up in the hop excitement and chased both around Philly. Unlike with Pliny the Elder I did stop short short of posting all the bars that have been pouring the sought after beers. Most recently in my quest for both I managed to grab a glass of HopSlam at TJ's, pick up a bottle from Capone's and score a six of hard to find Nugget Nectar in my travels.

So are both beers up to all the hype? Not quite. Now before I hear it from all the devoted fans of each I will say that they are both great beers. I love them. The problem was that it had been a year since I had either one and I read all the opinions and reviews. The admiration for both is pretty amazing and I don't know if any beer could stand up to all the hop acclaim. OK, maybe Pliny the Elder. Just like a movie that is overly praised, by the time you absorb all the hype even a great film can seem slightly less spectacular. These beers can suffer the same fate so it's best to sample each with a clear mind.

My Nugget Nectar experience came from a bottle. To my surprise the aroma of hops wasn't as overwhelming as I had expected. The citrusy aroma didn't grab my attention until after I took several whiffs from the pint glass. Part of this was due to the slightly cold serving temperature. I have to remember to turn down the beer fridge. Once it did warm the sweet floral aroma was nicely present. Where the hops didn't show immediately in the aroma it was the opposite when it came to taste. There was a strong upfront hop presence that hit the tongue and stayed. The bitterness showed early and didn't fade; lingering at the back of my mouth. Although the hops hang on it's not thick and super sticky so this 7.5 abv hop bomb remains very drinkable. Most hop fans will be pleased; I was. Being a fan of Troegs I will seek out another six and enjoy another pint or two. However with soooooo many high hop options arriving regularly in Philly I can't say that I will feel any shortcomings if I don't immediately get back to the Nectar.

The hop experience ramped up with HopSlam DIPA. My first encounter this year was a snifter at TJ's a couple weeks ago. My latest was at home, this past weekend, from a bottle purchased at Capone's. From the time the cap hit the table it was hops, hops, hops and more hops. The aroma wafted from the bottle and only intensified when poured into the glass. Take time to smell this one. Remember this came from the same too cold beer fridge as the Nugget Nectar. In the glass the beer is a hazy copper color with a thick white head that settled after a few sips. A tip of the glass delivered a grapefruit blast, with hints of orange, straight to the palate. It's citrusy hops and bitterness combined with a sweet background. The sweetness then steps forward and the alcohol shows in the end. The bottle states, "Ale brewed with honey", but I had a hard time picking out a true honey flavor. This is a beer to savor. I understand why it's often served in a snifter. The 10% abv, the overly sticky mouth feel and alcohol that doesn't hide may offend and for some take away drinkability. It's not my favorite DIPA or the most balanced but it still makes its way into my hop utopia. HopSlam almost lives up to the hype. If this were on draft I would have a hard time passing it up.

With all the fuss made over HopSlam and Nugget Nectar the release of Founders Double Trouble DIPA has been in the shadows. Check Capone's and TJ's, it may still be on draft. Now the hop head focus in Philly is shifting to the upcoming shipment of Pliny the Younger. I am sure that there are more than a few people who already have their growlers in the car waiting to hear who gets the first drop. Hang on Philadelphia with Beer Week less than a month away the ride only gets more fun.

Now That's a Six Pack

It has been almost a week since the Steelers won the Super Bowl and most people I know around here are sick of hearing about it. Being in the middle of Eagle Country I completely understand. So, this is my final word on the subject and the only reason I am posting this is because it does have a beer theme. Enjoy.

Oops it was Groundhog Day

In all my Super Bowl celebrating yesterday I forgot to acknowledge Groundhog Day. Even though I had my Hawaiian shirt picked out I wasn't able to make it up to The Grey Lodge Pub for the big event. I'm still a bit bummed over that one. Oh well if I only had the chance to do it over.

"Dont drive angry".

#6

Now that my heart is back in my chest and my breathing is back to normal I am loving the victory. I don't know how many times a person can watch the same ESPN highlights over and over before being considered insane but I am on my way to crazyville. The win gets a little bit sweeter with every replay. Last night's game was fantastic. The competition was good; the Steelers took an early lead and built on it just before the half with an improbable interception and 100 yard lumbering dash to the end zone by James Harrison. The Cardinals held it together, worked the middle of the field and although I like Larry Fitzgerald I dropped a few F-bombs when he trotted across the goal line for the go ahead TD. If I were going to script the ending of a big game this is the way I would of written it. Big Ben did what he had to do with under 3 minutes left in the game and Santonio Holmes made arguably the greatest catch in SB history. It all came to a close with the Steeler's D knocking the ball from Kurt Warner's hands and recovering it with seconds left to secure their 6th Super Bowl win. Whether you cheer for the black and gold or not you have to appreciate how they won.

Would I have loved to see a PA Super Bowl? YES, YES, YES and I will wish for it every year. Would I like to see the Eagles win a Super Bowl? Yes as long as it's not against the Steelers. For now I will enjoy the hometown victory and wait yet another year for the celebration here in Philly.
